United Way of Miami-Dade Helps Individuals and Families, who qualify, access free tax preparation and filing services. With tax season underway, individuals can access free tax preparation and filing services, as well as get information on eligibility requirements for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax credits. To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien with a valid Social Security number. If you do not have time to visit a site, you can arrange for a representative to come to your place of employment. If you would like to file your own taxes online for free, go to any one of these two resources: www.thebeehive.org/uwcfs;www.irs.gov. If you are interested in paving a path to long-term economic independence, consider the United Way Center for Financial Stability. The Center provides working individuals and families with a full range of services such as credit and debt counseling, financial coaching, employment assistance and free tax preparation for those who qualify. Our annual nonprofit conference, PHILANTHROPY Miami, has been expanded to include The Leadership Forum, held on 2/16/12 and to feature two tracks during PHILANTHROPY MIAMI, Basics and Advanced on 3/20/12.
-Hosted by Akerman Senterfitt, The Leadership Forum will include board leadership and senior non-profit leaders to explore concepts of social entrepreneurship and how they relate to the day-to-day work of nonprofits.
-Held at Jungle Island, PHILANTHROPY Miami will be a day-long event including "Basics," an intensive introduction to fundraising for professionals new to the field, and an "Advanced" track which will feature an engaging series of workshops on an array of topics and compelling keynotes.

FUNDING & IN-KIND RESOURCES

Florida Hardest-Hit Fund (HHF), the federal government has allocated funding to help pay the mortgages of qualified homeowners who are unemployed or underemployed through no fault of their own. Homeowners who qualify for financial assistance may receive up to six (6) months of monthly mortgage payments (including escrowed mortgage-related payments) and/or funds to pay past due mortgage payments to bring the mortgage current; these funds are paid directly to the loan servicer/lender. Certificate in Community Real Estate Development comes to South Florida in 2012, 2/4/12, Lauderdale Lakes Educational & Cultural Center, 3580 W. Oakland Blvd, Lauderdale Lakes, FL 33311. The program is designed for board members and staff of community development organizations, government community development, affordable housing developments, and policy makers and community leaders engaged in promoting affordable housing. H0250 Homeownership Counseling Certification: Principles, Practices and Techniques Part I, 2/06/12 - 2/10/12, 8:30 am - 4 pm, Citibank, 8750 NW 36th Street, 1st floor, Doral, FL 33178. This training session is only open to nonprofit housing counseling agencies invited by Citibank. Certificates of completion are issued only to participants who have attended and completed 100 percent of the course. There is no charge for the training, but all other costs (travel, lodging, parking etc.) are at the participants' expense. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. The Children’s Mental Health Conference – Working with Today’s Youth: Challenges and Opportunities, 5/17/12 – 5/18/12, at the Doubletree Hotel & Miami Airport Convention Center. The Institute for Child & Family Health is sponsoring the 17th Linking Forces Conference, offering a comprehensive view of children's mental health issues which address innovative strategies for high risk groups, creative partnerships and advocacy efforts, and will also highlight adolescents. Licensed mental health professionals can earn up to 11 hours of continuing education. The Doubletree Hotel & Miami Airport Convention Center is offering a special conference rate. Community Smiles 7th Annual Give Kids A Smile event, 2/10/12, 8am-Noon and 1pm-3:30pm, at 750 NW 20th St., Miami, FL 33127. This event is in partnership with Miami Children’s Hospital, Healthy Matthew, and Center for Family and Child Enrichment INC., and is sponsored by the American Dental Association to highlight children’s oral health. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

MDC Single Stop Mentoring Program, the program places a mentor and student in a two-year mentoring relationship to provide the student with the additional support needed to persist toward a college degree. For the mentor, it provides a volunteer opportunity tailored to fit the schedule of a working professional while providing the rewarding opportunity of assisting a student working toward their college degree. The process is simple - anyone living in the Miami area, who is 24 years or older and has completed a two-year college can apply. Fill out an application, attend a one-time mentor orientation and complete security screening. Once you have cleared these simple hurdles, you are matched with a student and will be expected to send one weekly email to your mentee and meet with them once a month at the MDC campus or MDC Single Stop sponsored event. Foster Care Review (FCR) is eager to recruit new citizen review panel volunteers to help make a difference in the lives of abused and abandoned children living in Miami-Dade's foster care system. Volunteer panel members spend one weekday per month reviewing the status of children and making recommendations to Miami's Juvenile Court and other concerned parties regarding each child's safety, well-being and permanency. FCR's volunteer panels provide caring and investigative oversight for each child, while information collected through our reviews helps FCR to advocate for system reform. FCR volunteers must be 25 years or older and must be a resident of Miami-Dade or Broward County. Background screening is required. No special skills are needed. Training will be provided. ReServe Miami helps continuing professionals age 55+ reinvest a career's worth of skills to strengthen their communities. ReServe Miami connects the county's under-resourced nonprofits and public institutions (partners) to a large base of experienced professionals 55+ (ReServists) who want to give back. In exchange for a stipend paid by the partner organization, ReServists in Miami-Dade County work in a variety of capacities – from infrastructure to direct service – to help organizations stay on mission. Miami Dade Military Service Partnership SSVF Program - Veterans Link Up, Inc. The SSVF program is part of the VA's commitment to end homelessness among veterans in the next five years. SSVF provides SHORT-TERM case management and supportive services to help low-income veterans and veteran families who qualify, to obtain (or retain) permanent, stable housing. Eligibility requirements: veterans and veteran families who are low income (below 50% of the Average Median Income for Miami-Dade County) and National Guard members who have been deployed AND have received a DD214.
