HIGHLIGHTS

Summer BreakSpot launches 2013 Outreach Campaign.  Summer BreakSpot is the name for Florida's USDA Summer Food Service Program. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS), the Florida Partnership to End Childhood Hunger (PTECH), and Florida 2-1-1 have teamed up to increase families' awareness about this program, which provides free nutritious meals to all children age 18 and under throughout the summer when they lose access to school meals. The program uses bilingual business cards to advertise Summer BreakSpot, a website where families can look up a nearby site, and to also share the 2-1-1 number to call if they do not have access to the Internet. Families can also text FoodFL to 877-877 to find the closest summer meals site near them. The double-sided cards come in English/Spanish and English/Creole, and will be placed in community venues in all 67 counties in the state that serve families in need. This year, community organizations should order materials online, starting today! The materials will ship directly to you. This is a new feature that makes participation in the Outreach Campaign even more convenient. Available materials include: the Summer BreakSpot business cards, posters, flyers and car magnets. It's all FREE; there is no cost to you or your organization. For Plexiglas stands for business card display, please call (954) 609-3474.

OTHER INFORMATION & OPPORTUNITIES

Technology Corner by Empower IT Group - where we encourage you to GET EMPOWERED! Each month we highlight technology concepts and resources that may be of value to your organization. This month, we focus on cloud computing versus in-house IT. There is much buzz about cloud computing, but is it right for everyone? Organizations that are considering "going cloud" need to ask and answer these key questions:  What percent of your workforce is based out of a single location?  What is the total "data footprint" - or volume of data you are looking to store (in GB)? What are the environmental variables for your office (power, Internet and security)? What is your budget for technology over a 3-year term? While going "cloud" might make sense for some businesses, other companies with traditional work environments may not see benefits in function or cost. Get clarity on all the variables before making decisions that impact your organization's operations and finances. EmpowerITGroup is a South Florida technology integration firm with more than a decade of experience supporting local not-for-profits. If you would like to find out more, or need help navigating the complex landscape of technology, contact us at (786) 262-8673 or info@empoweritgroup.com.

These scholarships were created by the Florida Legislature in 2001 to assure that low-income children have learning options. Under the law, the scholarships are based on financial need, not how well the child does in school. They are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and can be transferred to other eligible schools if the student moves within the state, or simply wants to attend a different Step Up partner school. Students who qualify for the free or reduced school lunch program may qualify for a scholarship to a private school or for funds to help cover transportation costs to an out-of-district public school. For the 2012-13 school year, scholarships were valued up to $4,335 for private school tuition or $500 to help cover transportation costs to attend a public school in another district, typically another county.
