Created in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, The Children's Trust, Miami-Dade County Public Library Systems, Early Learning Coalition and The Children's Movement - and through support provided by Carol and Barney Barnett - ReadingPals is a fun and meaningful way to provide our children with the best possible start in school and in life. Volunteers read to and engage in fun activities with a small group of two students for 30 minutes once a week. The next ReadingPals session will begin the week of 9/16/13 and will continue through to 4/30/14. Your organization may be eligible for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. If you are a small employer with fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees, pay an average wage of less than $50,000 a year, and pay at least half of employee health insurance premiums, then there is a tax credit that may put money in your pocket. For tax years 2010 through 2013, the maximum credit is 35 percent for small business employers and 25 percent for small tax-exempt employers such as charities. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), there is good news for small tax-exempt employers too. The credit is refundable, so even if you have no taxable income, you may be eligible to receive the credit as a refund so long as it does not exceed your income tax withholding and Medicare tax liability. The IRS provides a number of online resources that can help your organization determine eligibility, estimate how much you might receive, and understand all the details.

Health Foundation of South Florida announces new grant cycle. Do you have a project that is focused on improving the health status of underserved populations in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties? If so, the Health Foundation invites you to apply for a grant. The total amount of a request should fall between $20,000 and $200,000 over the entire duration of the grant. Only electronic applications will be accepted. Preliminary grant proposals are due 8/12/13 by 3 pm. Applications for Healthy Community Partnerships initiative due in August. Communities can be champions in advancing opportunities for residents to live healthy lives. Health Foundation of South Florida's new place-based initiative will support two communities over several years to produce fundamental, multi-sector, community-wide changes that significantly improve the long-term health and quality of life of residents. Two communities will be selected to join Healthy Community Partnerships. Eligible communities include: Buena Vista, City of North Miami Beach, Little Haiti, East Little Havana, City of North Miami, Overtown, City of Hialeah, City of Opa-Locka, Wynwood, City of Miami Gardens, and Liberty City. Aging Network's Volunteer Collaborative empowers older adults to volunteer - Since its launch in May 2012, more than 200 people have joined the online community at the new Aging Network's Volunteer Collaborative. The Volunteer Collaborative is an online resource to assist the Aging Network in engaging and empowering older adults and maximizing their leadership skills and experiences. It is funded by the Administration for Community Living Administration on Aging and led by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) in partnership with several other aging network partners. The goal of the Volunteer Collaborative is to increase the number of older adult volunteers to one million by 2015. Mentor a college student through MDC's Single Stop Mentoring Program - The program places a mentor and student in a 2-year mentoring relationship to provide the student with the additional support needed to persist toward a college degree. For the mentor, it provides a volunteer opportunity tailored to fit the schedule of a working professional while providing the rewarding opportunity of assisting a student working toward their college degree. The process is simple - anyone living in the Miami area, who is 24 years or older and has completed a 2-year college can apply. Complete an application, attend a one-time mentor orientation and complete security screening. Once you have cleared these simple hurdles, you are matched with a student and will be expected to send one weekly email to your mentee and meet with them once a month at the MDC campus, or MDC Single Stop sponsored event. Volunteer and make a difference for children in foster care - Foster Care Review (FCR) is eager to recruit new citizen review panel volunteers to help make a difference in the lives of abused and abandoned children living in Miami-Dade's foster care system. Volunteer panel members spend one weekday per month reviewing the status of children and making recommendations to Miami's Juvenile Court and other concerned parties regarding each child's safety, well-being and permanency. FCR's volunteer panels provide caring and investigative oversight for each child, while information collected through our reviews helps FCR to advocate for system reform. FCR volunteers must be 25 years or older and must be a resident of Miami-Dade or Broward County. Background screening is required. No special skills are needed. Training will be provided. ReServe Miami helps continuing professionals age 55+ strengthen their communities - The organization connects the county's under-resourced nonprofits and public institutions (partners) to a large base of experienced professionals 55+ (ReServists) who want to give back. Program to provide free admission to select Florida International University sports events. The BB&T Community Partners Kids Club program provides local youth groups, churches, youth centers and nonprofit organizations that work with youth, free admission to Florida International University home football games, as well as all women's sports events, and on a limited basis to men's basketball and baseball games. Once organizations become members of the program, they will receive updates on the sporting events. This is a great opportunity to expose local youth to Division I athletics and to the university setting. Summer BreakSpot 2013 outreach campaign materials available. Summer BreakSpot is the name for Florida's USDA Summer Food Service Program. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS), the Florida Partnership to End Childhood Hunger (PTECH), and Florida 2-1-1 have teamed up to increase families' awareness about this program, which provides free nutritious meals to all children age 18 and under throughout the summer when they lose access to school meals. The program uses bilingual business cards to advertise Summer BreakSpot, a website where families can look up a nearby site, and to also share the 2-1-1 number to call if they do not have access to the Internet. Families can also text FoodFL to 877-877 to find the closest summer meals site near them. The double-sided cards come in English/Spanish and English/Creole, and will be placed in community venues in all 67 counties in the state that serve families in need. This year, community organizations should order materials online, starting today! The materials will ship directly to you. This is a new feature that makes participation in the Outreach Campaign even more convenient. Available materials include: the Summer BreakSpot business cards, posters, flyers and car magnets. Step Up For Students Scholarship 2013-2014 - Since 2002, more than 271,000 scholarships have been awarded to low-income Florida students in grades k-12. These scholarships were created by the Florida Legislature in 2001 to assure that low-income children have learning options. Under the law, the scholarships are based on financial need, not how well the child does in school. They are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and can be transferred to other eligible schools if the student moves within the state, or simply wants to attend a different Step Up partner school. Students who qualify for the free or reduced school lunch program may qualify for a scholarship to a private school or for funds to help cover transportation costs to an out-of-district public school. For the 2012-13 school year, scholarships were valued up to $4,335 for private school tuition or $500 to help cover transportation costs to attend a public school in another district, typically another county. MassMutual's Life Bridge Program - This program helps the children of eligible families in need afford an education in the event a parent or guardian was to pass away. The program offers the opportunity for a free, $50,000 10-year term life insurance policy to eligible parents or guardians who qualify to apply. MassMutual pays the premiums. You are eligible if you are between the ages of 19 and 42, make between $10,000 and $40,000 annually, and are permanent or legal resident of the United States.
