MLK Day of Service - Snack Packing Activity
United Way of Miami-Dade

Currently, we have a need for volunteers to respond to the impacts and community implications of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Note that United Way of Miami-Dade continues to closely monitor and evaluate the situation to ensure we are taking necessary measures to protect the health and wellbeing of our volunteers. We will update you regarding the status of this volunteer opportunity should anything change. With roughly 37 percent of all Miami-Dade households as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and another 17 percent as living in poverty, for some of our neighbors, providing complete nutritious meals may be difficult. And with the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity in our community has increased. Come join United Way of Miami-Dade as we honor Martin Luther King Jr. through volunteerism with a day of service on Saturday, January 16th. Volunteers must be in good health, who have not been in contact with individuals showing signs of illness related to COVID-19, are needed to pack nutritional snacks for 200 families in our Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership centers. These snack packs can provide a bag of nutritious options for up to two days.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami

Have a lasting impact on the life of a child in our community by volunteering as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami! Volunteer mentors (Bigs) are strategically matched with a youth (Little) based on youth needs, volunteer skills, and common interests and personalities. Virtual mentoring opportunities are available through Bigs in Schools/Sites, in which Bigs and Littles spend time together at a designated site on a weekly basis. All matches are currently meeting online. Activities include watching movies together, fitness activities, taking virtual tours of parks and museums, discussing books and current events, or simply talking about what's going on in life. BBBS Miami staff also host periodic virtual Impact Activities throughout the year to provide opportunities for Bigs and Littles to spend time together. Bigs are asked to commit at least one (1) hour a week for a minimum of one year. Staff will be available every step of the way to provide support and make the volunteer experience a positive one for both you and your Little!

YWCA MLK Day of Service- The Every Day Choices of Poverty
YWCA of South Florida

Every year on the third Monday of January, our nation recognizes the holiday known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in honor of the historical black rights activist. It's a federal holiday meant to encourage all Americans to use this as "a day on, not a day off" and volunteer in their communities. In partnership with United Way Miami-Dade and United Way Broward, join us as we learn about the ALICE population and what it's like to live a day in their shoes, as the make life and financial decisions based on their economic status. Then we are encouraging guests to make a yard sign, explaining what they pledge to do in this effort until we see justice in economics. After the event, we will be posting these signs around the community to raise awareness and to showcase what we are committing to do in order to push for a fair and just system for us all. This event is being offered both in-person at our Marta Sutton Weeks Center in Overtown, as well as virtually via Zoom. Please note your preference during registration.
