United Way's Golden Wishes makes dreams a reality for older adults age 60+ in Miami-Dade County. As Miami-Dade residents live longer and healthier lives, we are finding new ways to honor, celebrate and maximize contributions for older adults. Through Golden Wishes, United Way teams up with nonprofits and community groups to grant wishes for special adults age 60+ who cannot pursue a wish on their own. Wishes are co-created with agencies, companies, churches, civic groups, and others. Together, we aim to celebrate older adults who continue to go above and beyond for their families, friends, community, or those who need a little extra help to overcome a barrier. With every wish, we celebrate positive aging.
Golden Wish recipient Tomas Chavez is a 79-year old who studied agronomy in Cuba. He lives in an apartment building and doesn't have access to many green spaces. Commissioner Higgins Office from District 5 nominated Tomas for our Golden Wishes program. Tomas wished for a community garden. In partnership with Riverside United Methodist Church which lent their property, we are set to plant the first community garden in Little Havana. We are looking for volunteers to participate in the first phase of this project, a cleanup of the space that will become the community garden. Volunteers started the cleanup last weekend, but final preparations are still needed.
United Way Miami will provide gloves, beverages, and snacks.
