Opportunity:

Project Ada - Volunteer Collection Drive

Description

About the Project:
Project Ada, led by 13-year-old Girl Scout Mina Boomer, is a community service initiative in partnership with M-DCPS to support teen moms in public schools. The goal is to collect items for gift basket starter kits to help these young mothers who are balancing school, work, and raising a child. Your participation in this collection will show these teen moms that they are supported and heard.

Survey Results:
The Dorothy M. Wallace Cope Center, where many teen moms attend school, conducted a survey to determine their top needs. Based on their responses, we are focusing on collecting the following items:

  • Diapers (93.3% of teen moms need them)
  • Toiletries for Moms (73.3% of teen moms need them, including makeup)
  • Baby Bottles (66.7% of teen moms need them)

Within the category of toiletries for moms, it became clear that while these young women are dedicated to caring for their children, they are still teenagers. They long to experience the simple joys of youth, like wearing mascara, lip gloss, eyeshadow, and blush, just like any other girl their age.

How You Can Help:
We are asking for volunteers to help by donating essential items for these teen moms. In return for your generous donations, you will earn volunteer hours as part of the collection drive.

Items Being Collected:

  • Diapers (2 hours volunteer credit per donation)
  • Toiletries for Moms (including makeup) (1 hour volunteer credit per donation)
  • Baby Bottles (1 hour volunteer credit per donation)
